Be overjoyed, not overwhelmed
Sure, your healthcare concierge is your secret weapon for dealing with billing headaches and inquiries. But it’s also nice to feel empowered with a better understanding of what your bill is trying to say. You can start by looking at what is known as your Explanation of Benefits (EOB).
Remember: Your EOB is not a bill
An EOB is a statement that comes from your health insurance company that explains what is paid, what is not paid, and why.
It looks like a bill because it contains the date of service, the code used to bill a service to an insurance company, the fee charged to the healthcare provider, and more than you care to look at. It also stipulates what you owe, which again, is why it looks like a bill. It is not a bill.
Now one more time for the cheap seats: It is not a bill!
Your doctor’s office may send a separate statement
Your statement should show you how much your insurance company was billed for the services you received. Keep in mind, your statement may arrive before your insurance company pays your doctor, in which case, you usually do not have to pay those amounts listed. You should only be responsible for any balance due after your doctor has been paid by your insurance provider.

LIFE TIP: Compare your billing statement to your EOB for any errors or inconsistencies.
It’s important to remember that not all insurance companies will send an EOB and not all doctors’ offices will send billing statements. You may receive one, none, or both. Welcome to the wonderful world of inconsistency! We’re here to help.
